Let's Write a CAE Proposal Together. Here's a real Cambridge English: Advanced sample proposal task. There are plans to research, demolish an old and unused building in the town where you are a student. You feel that the building should be saved. You decide to dongbin xiu thesis, write a proposal for the town council explaining why you think the building should be preserved, suggesting what could be done to hybrid research paper outline, modernise it and saying how the building could benefit the local people. Write your proposal . First I should come up with some ideas about why the building should be saved and life essay some ideas about how to modernise it. My home city in England is full of old buildings that have been turned into offices and flats so it's quite easy for me to come up with ideas. Research Outline! By the way - the xiu thesis 3 parts of the task could be used as 3 paragraphs in my proposal. Easy, right? historic - someone famous lived there? famous event there? architecture. landmark. local pride. turn into offices, flats, mixed use, creative spaces, green spaces, insulation, solar panels, parking, bike racks. great flats in local landmark, sense of pride in community, boost property values in area, need jobs in that part of city, connect X street with Y street, reduce crime.
This is cars, being written for my local council, so I'm going to be quite formal. I am not going to use bullet points because if you write well they are not needed. Dongbin Xiu Thesis! I'm going to use at least one passive sentence and at least one inversion (Not only do people love this building but also. Hybrid Research Paper! ). I'm not going to be a fanatic about this issue - that isn't persuasive. I AM going to mention problems with my plan, and give reasons why the old building SHOULD be demolished. Why? Because a balanced argument is a persuasive argument - but mostly because that will allow me to use more linking words like 'while, whereas' and some complex sentence structures like 'While there's no doubt the old building something something, I would argue that blah blah.' Enough waffle. Research! Let's write. Yo, council dudes!
You wanna knock down the rec centre on Princess Parkway? No wayz! I like it! Me and me mates used to go there and paper chuck pebbles at windows! Proposal to Repurpose Ducie Central. Research! In this proposal I aim to persuade the Council that Ducie Central is a landmark building, that its demolition is not in the public interest, and hybrid cars that the dongbin xiu thesis building could still have a bright future.
Why Ducie Central Should Be Preserved. Hybrid Cars Paper Outline! Ducie Central was the first adult education centre in essays on ernest, the city, and it stood as a point of pride for hundreds of years before falling into neglect. Even today in its shabby, vandalised state, it is warmly regarded - many older people took classes there, and even some teenagers can remember the annual fun fair that was held on the grounds. But the building is cars paper, more than memories - it's a place where education used to happen, and fortunate life essay where it can happen again. Ducie is old and would cost a fortune to heat. There's no doubt it would be expensive to insulate, install triple-glazed windows, and hybrid cars research set up solar panels on the roofs. However, local architects and fortunate life the Engineering College are willing to work on my proposed redevelopment for free. I recommend that one section be converted into office space - that would help offset the hybrid cars outline cost of the project. Fortunate Life Essay! Redevelopment Would Benefit Everyone. It's not hard to see who would benefit from demolition - property developers who would buy the land cheaply and throw up some copy/paste housing.
Modernising the building and re-opening the hybrid cars research paper college would benefit not only the people who would study there but also the whole community. It would be a focal point and we could hold the fun fair like in the past. I believe that modernising the crimes research building is the best choice and strongly urge you to consider it. I do blab on, don't I? So mine was pretty good, but let's look at one a student wrote. This is from the Cambridge CAE handbook so we'll be able to see exactly what Cambridge think about it. Hybrid Paper Outline! To: Municipal council. Subject: Municipal Library. I come through this letter to make an appeal for the not destruction of the sexism essays Municipal Library’s building.
One of the reasons why the outline building should be preserved is because of its touching past. It was built with only imported material of fortunate essay best quality, and hybrid cars outline it was the second library in the country. Crimes! It was also, for more than a hundred years, the biggest and more luxuous public building in the whole country. For its characteristic seventeenth century building and for its importance in the past, it is cars outline, still studied and visited by historians. The building is located right in the middle of the town, so it is accessible for the entire population, and dongbin xiu thesis it is outline, also the biggest building in town, and hate it can surely support more books than any other building. By destructing the building it would with absolutly no doubt be a huge loss of books and culture. There is no point arguing that the building is quite old-fashioned and could use some improvements.
It could really use some painting and repairing on hybrid cars research, the wall and floor, however, the best would be making some technological improvements, such as elevatiors, computers and an electronic “finding books” system. To sum up, there are plenty of reasons why the library should be preserved, it benefits the people, the history and life essay the culture, and I would be pleased if you took my letter in research outline, consideration. Remember that Cambridge score writing on 4 things: Content, Communicative Achievement, Organisation, and Language. Critical Essays On Ernest! For content they gave this student a 5 (out of cars research 5). He did everything he was supposed to do. In the real world, the reader would understand the proposal and be able to make a decision. I'm going to give myself 5 out of 5 for my text. Cambridge rated this at only 2. The first problem is that the student said he was writing a letter instead of a proposal. A History Of The World In 6 Glasses Thesis! It's doubly weird because he uses headings like in a proposal.
Writing 'letter' is just confusing. The main problem is that the text focuses on cars research paper outline, the past - proposals are about the future. My text might be a bit too past-leaning, too. So maybe I wouldn't get full marks. I should have written more about the fortunate future benefits of cars paper preserving Ducie Central. Here the crimes student scored a 3. Cambridge praised the way he split the text into sections each dealing with a separate aspect of the question.
That's good news for my text because I did the same. They also liked that he used cohesive devices - phrases that link sentences and paragraphs together and that he used complex structures to make key points. Hybrid Cars Research Paper! The problem seems to be that he doesn't have complete control over these sentences and they seem a bit unnatural to a native speaker. I'm going to essays, award myself 5 out of 5 for MY text because my text is almost as high quality as The Old Man And The Sea. This was another weak point for the candidate - he only scored a 2. Research Paper Outline! There are examples of good language and he tried to use some advanced phrases and grammar. And while there were some mistakes they don't really stop you from understanding the text.
So is 2 a bit harsh? I think so - but that just shows the standard that is expected. You have to have good control - not just in a CAE proposal but in whatever you write at then by oodgeroo noonuccal essay, this level. And you have to impress the examiners with your vocabulary and have minimal mistakes. There's a decent 'how to write a proposal' page on Ruben Valero's website. It includes some key phrases for proposals.
He uses bullet points in the 'conclusion' part of the proposal, which is a good place to use them.

Given the challenge to define the discipline, there is paper outline a need to not just simply recognize, but also organize, the various definitions of art therapy. Malchiodi (2007) attempted to depict the then, tension among various schools of cars thought by neatly dividing them into dongbin two camps – “Art as Therapy” and “Art Psychotherapy”. Referred to as “Art as Therapy”, this notion of paper art therapy focuses on the “inherent healing power” of the creative process of art making. The process of art making remains central and paper is seen as an outline, experience that can lead to dongbin xiu thesis, emotional reparation and personal transformation. (Malchiodi, 2007) A strong focus on the process of art making could be seen in AATA (2010)’s official definition of research Art Therapy:
(Art Therapy) is based on the belief that the creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps people to resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness, and and now noonuccal essay achieve insight. On the other hand, “Art Psychotherapy” differs to “Art as Therapy” in that it sees art as a mean for symbolic communication. By highlighting the art image or artwork, a triangular relationship is formed between the therapist, the client and the art. Artistic expressions such as drawings and paintings was said to play a significant role in cars research outline, “achieving insight; resolving conflicts; solving problems; and would lead to positive changes, growth, and healing”. (Malchiodi, 2007, p. 5) The unique contribution of and now by oodgeroo essay a client- therapist- image triad would be demonstrated in outline, various parts of this essay. Theoretical Orientations- An Eclectic Approach.
In practice, art therapists build on various theoretical orientations for healing purpose. Sometimes regarded as an by oodgeroo essay, interdisciplinary form of paper outline psychotherapy, art therapy is fundamentally a synthesis of art and research paper therapy (Malchiodi, 2007; Rubin, 1999, 2010; Vick, 2003). With the constant interplay of various shaping forces, the scope of knowledge art therapists possess is rooted in a variety of hybrid cars research paper sources including; developmental, psychological, educational, cognitive and transpersonal perspectives. (AATA, 2010) As the critical essays on ernest hemingway, very nature of art assumes a dynamic unconscious (Rubin, 2004); many believe that psychoanalytic theory still dominates art therapy. However, both the AATA and the British Association of Art Therapy [BAAT] described art therapist to be of a variety of orientations. The claim is backed up by cars research paper outline research conducted in dongbin, 2000, where 21% of art therapists described their theoretical orientation as “eclectic” and a diversity of theoretical approaches indicated gestalt, behavioral, cognitive, psychoanalytic and Jungian were being cited at similar levels. Hybrid Research Outline? (Elkins Stovall, 2000) Post-modern approaches- Art therapy melding with systemic therapy. Growing up parallel to group therapy and family therapy, art therapists readily embrace the systemic perspective and a postmodernist way of thinking. Family art therapy was recognized in 1989 by life AATA; since then the convergence of cars research paper outline art therapy and family therapy has been smooth and has achieved much success. (Arrington, 2001; Riley, 2001) Family art therapists blend a commitment to the use of art with a commitment to a history of the world in 6 thesis, think systemically.
The use of art as “container for hybrid cars research paper, emotions”, for instance, melds seamlessly with one of family therapy’s core concept “meta-communication”. In meta communication, families were invited to step out of the problem and to “gaze” at it from an critical essays hemingway, external stance, by hybrid cars involving an art product the problem is automatically externalized and made tangible, allowing the family to work as a team to conquer “it”. Moreover, art making is indeed a handy tool in family mediation settings as messages too delicate or powerful to be expressed in verbal form could then be expressed in visual form. (Rubin, 2004) Drawing from the above example, one could see that art therapy is a fluid modality that may be adapted to support other theoretical approaches to therapy; but such convergence does not happen in hate crimes research paper, a casual manner but is often a considered integration of a mutually supportive framework. (Riley, 2001) Treatment Goal– The Activation of a triangular relationship. As mentioned above when defining “Art as Therapy”, art making in itself is inheritably therapeutic. Whilst the freedom to use art materials could provide clients with a tangible sense of cars outline control; art making also has the ability to generate self-esteem, encourage risk taking and experimentation, teach new skills and enrich one’s life. In a clinical setting where patients feel restricted in certain aspects of life, art making could enhance a patients’ self esteem by; giving them an interest, showing them an ability within their physical capacity and and now by oodgeroo helping them develop their individuality and personality. Hybrid Paper Outline? (Malchiodi, 2007) Nevertheless, the notion of “art as therapy” has its limitations. Though valid, it does not explain Art Therapy’s distinctiveness to critical essays, other forms of therapy such as Recreational therapy or Occupational therapy. The symbolic power of an art image.
Art therapy should extend beyond recreation and hybrid outline relaxation. In 1989, the BAAT‘s official definition for critical hemingway, art therapy started by stating, “The focus of art therapy is the image” and highlighted the process as involving “the creator, the artefact and the therapist.” (Waller, 1991, p.3) The pioneers of art therapy Margaret Naumburg and Edith Kramer both see art as a distinctive platform from which the client and therapist could engage in and gain insights from. Naumburg believed that art had symbolic qualities that came from the subconscious whilst Kramer saw art as a medium to resolve the conflict between id, ego and superego. (Waller, 1991) The International Art Therapy Organization (2010) further explains the power of art as a transitional object by recognizing its symbolic nature: “When words are not enough, we turn to images and symbols to tell our stories.” In sessions, art therapists strive to recognize the hybrid cars research outline, nonverbal symbols and metaphors that might be difficult to express in words or in other modalities. Some even believe that for existential problems that have no rational solutions the symbolic function of the arts offers at least a partial mode of response and thus relief. (Blatner, 1992) In group settings, for instance; Malchiodi (2007) believes the most important advantage of using art expression is critical essays on ernest its ability to make that group’s process, interaction and dynamic visible and tangible. This enabled thoughts and possibilities to be anchored. In fact, group therapists believe that art therapies enhance inclusiveness for the sharing imagery usually feels closer than sharing in verbal form; whilst the use of symbols could easily remind clients of paper outline shared themes and reduce sense of loneliness. (Blatner, 1992; Yalom, 1985) Art therapy also aims for a cathartic emotional release for clients.
The symbolic nature of art therapy could access thoughts and feelings deep in then and now by oodgeroo essay, one’s subconscious that otherwise would not be reached. Research? Kramer regards art as the “container of emotions” whilst most therapists agree that art is a way of expressing inner feelings. As it is more difficult to decode the meaning of symbols in a linear fashion many cases clients find art a safe medium to express “dangerous” feelings. Critical Essays Hemingway? (Malchodi, 2007; Waller, 1991) The unavoidable treatment goal. Although art therapy is not the only form of therapy that incorporates an hybrid, experiential element, the experiential nature of art itself makes the engagement of a client’s participation a treatment goal that cannot be overlooked. In art therapy, attendance of the individual is crucial. As the in 6 glasses, medium itself is a way of communication, participation begins the moment a client starts exploring different mediums. Cars Research Outline? (Rubin, 2010) During creation of the art it is the clients, instead of the therapist, that give the art product personal meaning. Very few therapies depend to such a degree on the active participation of the a history in 6 glasses, individual. When an art product is created, the permanence of hybrid cars it offers a unique area of involvement; clients can continuously look at it, be intrigued by it, and eventually be challenged to explore their meanings. (Blatner, 1992; Degen Lansen, 2006; Malchodi, 2007; Riley, 2001) Effective therapies require more than an intellectual analysis but rather an experience of how to practically apply new understandings in life.
Ensuring that the client is “present” is particularly important when a catharsis take place, as the client can need a very direct experience in order to integrate it. By staying in the present moment, and by experiencing their conflicts clients gradually expand their level of then noonuccal essay self-awareness and thus personal growth. (Blatner, 1992; Yalom, 1985) Engagement of the client with art is particularly helpful in group work. The hands-on experience could evoke a sense of “playfulness” in adults, helping them communicative and “let go” of fear, failure and hybrid research rejection. The experimental nature of art making could also re-direct easily distracted clients into speaking in the “here-and-now”; while the requirement for active participation in making art can help equalize participation. Research? All these factors are key to sustaining a more cohesive and safe group environment for therapeutic growth. (Blatner, 1992; Liebmann, 2004; Malchodi, 2007)
Client groups- from universality to specialty. Art making is almost universally possible which appeals to art therapy’s diverse clientele group. Art therapy can work with adults with a range of difficulties including depression, addictive and self- destructive behaviors, learning difficulties and psychotic illnesses (Rubin, 2010). Some art therapists attempted to define more specifically which patient population art therapy is intended for. Cars? There were attempts, for instance, that looked at descriptions of psychological states to ascertain whether those with borderline personality and psychotic organizations are appropriate for art therapy (Dudley, 2004).
Nevertheless, as everyone has the ability to sexism essays, be creative through art it could act as a basis for a multitude of therapy forms. Art therapy facilitates the therapeutic process of working with resistant clients. In therapy, previously suppressed subconscious feelings might materialize fearfully or unpredictably. Denial and resistance in therapy, though understandable, might hinder the therapeutic process. Art therapy’s abstract nature could subtly and progressively reduce this resistance. Cars? Whilst some individuals tend to be defensive, when speaking in abstract terms or by distracting themselves, art can gradually increase the explicitness of the symbolic representation of crimes research emotionally- laden ideas, and to experience the subconscious dynamic more vividly. For instance, the use of art could overcome avoidance tactics that could be easily used by the client in verbal therapies such as; breaking eye contact, narrating in the past or speaking in general terms. (Blatner, 1992; Liebmann, 2004) Through observing objectified material, art therapy allows a temporal flexibility for research outline, continued exploration, reflection and comparison over a period of hate crimes research time, where words can be easily forgotten and denied. By utilizing an external object, an hybrid research outline, art therapist could also control the degree of intrusiveness, which allows for greater flexibility. By adjusting the nature of art activity a therapy could be both directive and non- directive, catering to the differing needs of clients. For instance, Murphy (1998) conducted research and concluded that working in a non- directive way with a sexually abused client is more appropriate as they needed to xiu thesis, feel in control especially as they could find direction intrusive. Breaking through resistance in verbal therapies.
Art therapy is also known for hybrid cars outline, its suitability for clients who feel restricted in life, the use of hybrid paper outline verbal therapies. (Blatner, 1992; Liebmann, 2004) In the field of psychiatry, a recent study (Degen Lansen, 2006) has found that art therapy is a very promising form of treatment for alexithymia – the incapacity to discern and verbally express emotions. Having a therapy that centers on the contemplation of art differs from verbal therapy in a history of the in 6 glasses thesis, that there is no inevitable beginning and end as in a verbal story. The term “spatial matrix” is used to hybrid cars research paper outline, describe the dynamic nature of sexism essays art. Hybrid Cars Research Paper Outline? As art expression surpasses rules of language, such as syntax, grammar, logic and correct spelling; it can express many complexities simultaneously. (Malchiodi, 2007) Contradictory elements can be included; love and hate for sexism essays, a family member, for instance, could co- exist. Many individuals who experience contrasting emotions in quick succession often struggle to articulate what exactly it is that they are experiencing.
The ability of art to cars paper outline, contain paradoxical elements helps people integrate and synthesize conflicting feelings and experiences. Sexism Essays? (Malchodi, 2007; Sullivan, 2003) Interpretation and assessment in art therapy. The definition and scope of art therapy have been influenced by mental health and medical settings in which art expression has been used as a form of intervention. The AATA (2010) defined art therapy as “mental health profession” where therapists use their evaluation skills to design sessions for clients in achievement of research paper therapeutic goals and sexism essays objectives. The medical model has impacted on hybrid paper outline art therapy in xiu thesis, various ways, with its influence on the assessment phase of therapy being the most controversial. It is commonly thought that art therapy is purely about interpreting the content of the client’s artistic expression. In modern psychology, standardized diagnostic assessment is emphasized especially under the influence of projective drawing assessments, with formalized procedures and standardized methods of interpretation, which developed in cars research paper, the 20th century.
The first drawing assessment for psychological purposes was created in research, 1906 by German psychiatrist Fritz Mohr (Liebmann, 2004; Malchiodi, 2010; Vick, 2003) and cars since then the invention of projective tests proliferate the field. Projective tests were claimed to detect hurt, anxiety, depression and psychiatric disturbance; yet operational definitions were often ambiguous. (Hacking, 1999) Notwithstanding, with the influence of the anti- psychiatry movement on the art therapy profession in the late 1960s and of the world in 6 glasses early 1970s many art therapists began to eschew diagnostic testing and hybrid cars research question the of the world glasses, validity of cars research therapists making interpretative assumptions. Art therapists seem be more comfortable with an intuitive approach than other mental health professionals; while they tend to noonuccal, be more “anti- authoritarian” and “anti- theoretical” (Vick, 2003, p.18), they are more likely to improvise on the protocol of standardized assessments to cars research, suit a particular purpose. (Dudley, 2004; Rubin, 1999) Recognizing that mental patients are defenseless against the process of hate clinicians using them for diagnosis, some art therapists were concerned with the possibility of “image abuse”.
It was argued that art diagnosis was built upon “narrow and typically idiosyncratic psychological theories” (McNiff, p. 315) and such a linear approach often amounted to a form of image abuse where children client and clients in mental hospital often do not get the chance to speak for themselves but are instead judged upon others’ interpretation of their art product. Recently, some therapists raised concern over the use of psychiatric language in assessments as it set the scene for preconceptions arising from diagnostic labeling. It was believed that the labeling effect would block the addressing of individual, personal or socio-political context, which prevented an open therapeutic interaction. (Dudley, 2004) Likewise, many art therapists advocate not interpreting art but having the patience to allow the meaning of the material to emerge. It was believed that art diagnosis obscures the deeper meanings of art expressions and blocks their healing powers. (Mcniff, 2004; Riley, 2004) They are concerned with preserving the cars outline, “soul and fortunate life imagery” expressed in peoples’ art, rather than have them interpreted and oriented to goals and outcomes. Some have regarded the different approaches towards assessment as analogous to that between the US and the UK. (Gilroy and Skaife, 1997, (Jones 2004) Perhaps rooted in the US healthcare system, it was observed that the US adopts a more problem- solving approach— where art is hybrid cars used to elicit material for diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. However in the UK there is a strong influence from psychoanalytic and psychodynamic theory, art is seen as inherently healing through a shamanic and spiritual way. Of The Thesis? Through its official website, the BAAT had made a statement that clearly states its stance towards the diagnostic use of imagery: “ The art therapist is not primarily concerned with making … diagnostic assessment… The overall aim of its practitioners is to enable a client to effect change ad growth on a personal level through use of art materials…”
Despite the difference in attitude towards assessment, the BAAT adopted a rather inclusive approach to defining art therapy: “Art Therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art media as its primary mode of communication.” In reality, tension and hybrid research paper outline conflicts are unavoidable for a growing profession, yet most art therapists build on common ground and on ernest hemingway share the same passion and hybrid cars research paper belief. To conclude, the main difference between art therapy and life essay other forms of psychotherapy is that it is a “three- way process”; apart from the client and the therapist there is the presence of the image. Making the subconscious tangible, durable, observable is a unique treatment goal to art therapy; with such art therapy is flexible enough to accommodate different theoretical orientations and approaches to assessment. With the research paper, unique quality offered by art, art therapy is almost universally applicable. American Art Therapy Association (2010). AATA- about us. And Now By Oodgeroo Noonuccal Essay? Child Not Doing Homework? Read This Before You Try Anything Else. (This article is part of the Be Positive series. Get free article updates here.) With less than an hour to go before my seven-year-old daughter’s bedtime, my home was a long way from being the oasis of research paper outline, calm I was hoping for at crimes paper, that time of evening. Instead Lily had just scribbled all over her homework worksheet, thrown her pencil on the floor and was now yelling at the top of her voice: ‘ I hate Math. I suck at it. ’ With my younger daughter to hybrid cars research paper outline, put to bed, Lily in fortunate life essay a melt-down and me exhausted after a day at work, the tension was rapidly rising. But even if I could calm ourselves down, there was no end in sight. Cars Research Outline. Even if I could persuade her to finish her math homework, Lily still had the whole book reading to do. So I was facing two choices – Should I stand over her and insist that not doing homework was NOT an xiu thesis, option? Or, should I tell her to put the books away, write a note to hybrid research outline, her teacher and just let her unwind and play in the lead-up to bedtime?
Have you been there? What choice would you make? The choice I would make now is very different to xiu thesis, what my choice would have been a few years back. Back then, I’d try to push through with a mixture of cajoling and prompting and assurances that she did know how to do her Math really . If that didn’t work then maybe in despair and frustration that she didn’t seem to want to try, I would have got angry and tried to explain how serious I was about this. Like every parent, I had started out assuming I was simply doing the very best for my child by making sure her work was as good as it could be.
After all, what choice did I have? From the very early days in the private nursery she attended, I found myself surrounded by hybrid outline, lots of other mothers locked into dongbin xiu thesis, the same race to make their children the brightest and the best. As Lily got older, I came to learn how insidiously contagious pushy parenting is. If one of the mothers spotted another a parent with a Kumon Math folder, we all rushed to sign up too – for fear our children would get left behind. Neurosis underpinned every conversation at cars research outline, the school gates – particularly as all of us were aiming to critical essays hemingway, get our children into a small handful of hybrid research outline, selective private schools in the area.
Bit by bit, the sexism essays parenting journey which had started off being so exciting and rewarding, was turning into a stressful game of hybrid outline, one-upmanship. But children are not products to be developed and fortunate essay, put on show to reflect well on us. Depending on what happens on the night, every child is conceived with a unique combination of hybrid research outline, genes which also maps out their strengths, weaknesses and personality traits before they are even born. Lily may have been bred into a competitive hotbed. But as an innately modest and sensitive child, she decided she did not want to play. The alarm bells started ringing in hate crimes research Grade Three when, after I personally made sure she turned in the best Space project, she won the prize. Hybrid Research Paper Outline. While I applauded uproariously from the sidelines, Lily, then seven, fled the room in tears and refused to accept the book token from the Head. When she calmed down, she explained she hated us making a fuss. Fortunate Life. But what is just as likely is that she disliked the fact that her successes had become as much ours as hers.
Even at cars paper outline, that young age, no doubt she also realized that the more she succeeded, the critical hemingway more pressure she would be under to keep it up. Over the next few years, the issues only deepened. The Problem of Not Doing Homework. Slowly, Lily started to find excuses for not doing homework. Hybrid Cars Research Paper Outline. Our home started to become a battlefield. She would barely open her books before yelling: “ I’m stuck ” –when really she was just terrified of getting it wrong. The increasing amounts of homework sent home by the school gradually turned our house into a war zone – with me as the a history of the world glasses thesis drill sergeant. Homework is one of the most common flash points between kids and parents – the crossroads at hybrid cars outline, which academic endeavors meet parental expectations at close quarters – and behind closed doors. Surveys have found that homework is the single biggest source of friction between children and parents.
One survey found that forty per cent of kids say they have cried during rows over it. Even that figure seems like a dramatic underestimate. Yet more and more, it is recognized that homework undermines family time and dongbin xiu thesis, eats into hours that should be spent on hybrid research paper play or leisure. A straightforward piece of work that would take a child twenty minutes at school can easily take four times as long at home with all the distractions and delaying tactics that go with it. As a result, children get less sleep, go to bed later and fortunate, feel more stressed. Homework has even started to take over the summer vacations.
Once the long break was seen as a chance for children to have adventures, discover themselves and explore nature. Now the cars summer months are viewed as an extension of the sexism essays academic year – a chance for kids to catch up… or get ahead with workbooks and tutoring. But ultimately homework abides by hybrid cars research paper outline, the law of diminishing returns. Researchers at critical essays, Duke University found that after a maximum of two hours of homework, any learning benefits rapidly start to drop off for high school students. While some children will do everything to avoid doing it, at paper outline, the other extreme others will become perfectionists who have to sexism essays, be persuaded to go to hybrid research paper, bed. Some moms I spoke to had to bribe their children to do less!
Given the essay cloud of anxiety hovering over hybrid research paper outline, them, no wonder some of dongbin, these children perceive education as stressful. Perhaps fewer parents would go down the path of hybrid cars research paper, high performance parenting if they realized how much resentment it creates in their children. The irony is that all this obsession with pushing our kids towards success, pushes away the very people we are trying to by oodgeroo, help. While all of us would say we love our children no matter what, unfortunately that’s not the message our kids hear. Instead, children become angry when they feel we are turning them into passive projects. Rather than feel like they are disappointing us, they disconnect. Early signs may be they become uncommunicative after school, stop looking parents in paper outline the eye, secretive or avoidant. But we need to remember that unhappy stressed kids don’t learn. Over the hate research paper next few years, Lily’s insistence on cars research outline not doing homework kept getting worse.
To try and get to the bottom of hemingway, it, my husband Anthony and I took her to see educational psychologist who found strong cognitive scores and no signs of learning difficulties. But what the report did identify was how profoundly Lily’s self-worth had been affected. Even though I had never once told her she should be top of the class, she still felt she had to be good at everything. Hybrid Cars Research Outline. If she couldn’t be, she didn’t think there was any point trying at life essay, all. It was clear despite our best efforts to support her, Lily constantly felt criticized. She was becoming defensive and hybrid, resentful. Most serious of all, by claiming she couldn’t do her homework – when she could – she was testing if my love for her was conditional on her success. I had to face up to the painful truth that unless I took immediate action – and killed off my inner Tiger Mom – my child and I were growing apart. When her tutor rang to tell me Lily needed a break, I was delighted to agree. Since then, I have let her focus on hemingway the subjects that really matter to paper outline, her – art and music – and a history of the in 6 glasses, have let her decide what direction to take them in.
I also made a deliberate effort to spend time with Lily – just the two of us – so we can simply “be” together. Now instead of trips to the museums and classical concerts, we go for walks in the park and hot chocolates. Unfortunately, over the years, an inner critic had grown up inside Lily’s head that kept telling her she was not good enough. I realized I needed to take quite deliberate steps to research paper, address that if she was to a history of the in 6 glasses thesis, be happy with herself again. To help her recognize and dismiss the voice that was bringing her down, I took her to see a Neuro-Linguistic Programming coach who teaches children strategies to untangle the persistent negative thoughts that undermine their self-belief – and hybrid research paper outline, replace them with positive ones. Before we began, Jenny explained that Lily’s issues are not uncommon. As a teacher of 30 years experience, Jenny believes the fortunate life growing pressure on children to perform from an early age is contributing to a general rise in learning anxiety.
The youngest child she has helped was six . It’s children like Lily, who don’t relish a contest, who are among the cars outline biggest casualties. At home, some have been made to feel they are not good enough by parents or are intimidated by more academic sisters and brothers. Some may develop an inferiority complex simply because they are born into critical hemingway, high-achieving families. Once established, failure can also become self-reinforcing. Even when they get good marks, children like Lily still dwell on the pupil who got the higher one to support their negative views of hybrid research outline, their abilities, making it a self-perpetuating downward spiral. It’s when children start to see this self-criticism as fact that the negative self-talk can start. As she sat on critical on ernest the sofa, Jenny asked Lily if she had ever heard a nagging voice in her head that put her down.
Lily looked surprised but answered that yes, she had. Asked who it was, my daughter replied: “It’s me, but the mean me.” Asked to draw this character, Lily depicted an angry, disapproving female figure with her hands on her hips, with a mouth spouting the words “blah, blah, blah.” When asked to name her, Lily thought for a moment before coming up with the cars name Miss Trunch-Lily, so-called because the figure is half herself – and half the hectoring teacher from Roald Dahl’s Matilda. Now Miss Trunch-Lily had been nailed, Jenny and Lily agreed an easy way to deal with her would be to talk back and tell her “Shut up, you idiot” one hundred times. But that would take a long time, so Lily and Jenny came up with a quicker solution; imagining a canon which would instantly send a shower of 60 candies into her mouth so she couldn’t say another word. Next time Lily heard her nagging voice, all she had to fortunate life essay, do was press an imaginary button and her nemesis would be silenced. In the months that followed, Lily seemed to relax. Gradually the procrastination about hybrid paper homework started to vanish – and Lily was much more likely to open her books after school and quietly get on with her homework.
We have recently come back from a week in a seaside cottage with no Internet or phone signal. There was no homework, no extra workbooks to do, no music exams to prepare for. Nor did we use our vacation as a catch-up period to prepare the girls to critical essays on ernest, get ahead. Instead my husband, my daughters and I went on long walks with our dog. We examined different types of paper outline, seaweed and examined crabs in rock pools.
Back in the cottage, we sat around and read books that interested us. I let the children play upstairs for hours, not on their phones, but in long elaborate role-plays, without feeling the need to interrupt once. I would wager that Lily and essay, Clio learnt more about themselves – and what they are capable of – in a single week than in a whole semester at their schools where they hardly get a moment to hybrid research paper, stop and think. When I talk about my journey of dongbin xiu thesis, being a slow parent, I often find that other parents look shocked – particularly those who firmly believe they are responsible for making their children into the successes they are. Hybrid Research. So, I shared my journey in the book Taming the sexism essays Tiger Parent: How to put your child’s well-being first in a competitive world . Of course, for the child born with a go-getting personality, teaming up with turbo-charged parents can be a winning combination – to start with at hybrid research, least. But as adults, we have to start asking – how high we can raise the bar before it’s too high for crimes paper, our children to research, jump? After all, a bigger picture is also emerging: a rise in anxiety disorders, depression and then and now by oodgeroo, self-harm among children who have grown up with this continual pressure – and the emergence of a generation who believe they are losers if they fail, they’ve never done enough if they win. Even among children who succeed in this environment, educationalists are finding pushy parenting creates a drive towards perfectionism which can turn into research paper outline, self-criticism when these young people can’t live up to such high standards. I’m happy that in the midst of this arms race to fortunate, push our kids more and more, there are changes afoot.
Around the world, parents and educators are drawing up a blue-print for research paper, an alternative. Whether it’s slow parenting, minimalist parenting, free-range parenting – or the critical essays more bluntly named Calm the F*** Down parenting, there is paper outline, recognition that we need to resist the xiu thesis impulse to research, constantly push and by oodgeroo essay, micro-manage. As a mother to Lily, as well as my younger daughter, Clio, I’ve decided I don’t want to be a part of paper, all those crushing burdens of expectations. I want to sexism essays, provide a relief from it. Apart from the hybrid cars research outline fact it makes children happier, it’s also so much more fun. Now I love the fact that when Lily messes around in the kitchen making cupcakes, I no longer have to noonuccal, fight the urge to tell her to hurry up – and badger her to finish her homework. Of course, not doing homework is not an option – but these days in our house the aim is to do it as quickly and efficiently as possible. If a concept is not understood, I don’t pull my hair out trying to be the teacher and trying to play ‘catch-up’. If Lily, now 12, genuinely does not understand it, I write a note to the member of the staff to explain that it may need further explanation. It’s a simple system and hybrid research paper outline, is working perfectly fine for hate, us. I like it that when she comes home from school, and cars research paper outline, I ask her, ‘How are you?’ I really mean it.
It’s no longer code for: ‘What marks did you get today, darling?’ and I’m not thinking ‘Hurry up with your answer, so we can get on with your homework.’ Most of all I love the fact that I can finally appreciate Lily for the person she is now– a 12-year-old girl with an acerbic sense of critical, humor who likes Snoopy, play-dates and hybrid research, kittens – and life, not for the person I once wanted her to be. The 2-Minute Action Plan for Fine Parents. For our quick contemplation questions today – Imagine meeting your child in 20 years times. Ask them to describe their childhood. Do they describe it as magical?
Or do they look back on it as a race from one after school activity and homework project to the next? Ask yourself what do you want for your children? When you say you want your children to be happy, what has that come to hybrid research paper outline, mean to sexism essays, you? If you really analyze it, has it drifted into being interpreted as professional success and financial acumen? Furthermore, have you come to judge success by cars, a very narrow definition of traditional career achievement and earning power? Now check again. If you look around you, what do the happiest people you know have in sexism essays common? Is it material goods, high-flying jobs and cars research paper outline, academic qualifications? Or is it emotional balance? If you approach the a history of the world glasses thesis question another way, are the wealthiest people you know also the most satisfied with life? The Ongoing Action Plan for Fine Parents.
Spend some time sorting through any conflicts related to your kids not doing homework. To start with, train your children in cars paper good habits and place time limits on how long homework should take from the start. Ask the school how long a child should spend on each subject at xiu thesis, night. Then you can help keep those limits in place by hybrid cars research paper outline, telling kids they can’t spend a minute more – or a minute less – than the allotted time. Find the time of the day after school that works best for your child – either straight after arriving home or after a short break. Agree a start time every day so that the sexism essays rule turns into hybrid paper, a routine and sexism essays, there is less room for resistance and negotiation. Don’t finish their homework for kids because you are desperate to get it off the evening’s to-do list.
That will just mask the problem and get you dragged into a nightly conflict. Help them instead to take responsibility for their homework, while you provide guidance from the sidelines on research paper an on-need basis. Award-winning parenting writer Tanith Carey is a mother-of-two who writes books which aim to address the most pressing issues for critical essays, modern families – and hybrid paper, how to a history of the world in 6 thesis, build strong, resilient kids in today’s challenging world. Her latest book Taming the Tiger Parent: How to put your child's well-being first in a competitive world has been called a big picture book to ‘re-orientate our parenting’, ‘highly readable’ ‘well-researched’ and ‘ beautifully written’ by teachers, parents and hybrid outline, professionals. The book has received global coverage from outlets ranging from the NBC Today Show to the New York Post to yahooparenting, the Guardian and dailymail.online. Her seventh book 'Girls Uninterrupted - A manual for raising courageous daughters' - will be published in February 2015. This is interesting to me because it doesn’t match our experience at all. We are struggling with my daughter doing homework, but it’s more of an a history world, adolescent rebellion/lethargy thing. My kids attend a Montessori school which generally does not assign homework. What homework they tend to get in the elementary levels is a packet of assorted reading and cars paper, math that they have an hate paper, entire week to do at whatever pace works for hybrid research paper, them.
My son’s homework is optional and he always opts out. (He’s very busy at critical essays, home drawing and playing piano and he’s already reading at a high school level in research outline second grade, so we never worry about essays on ernest academics with him anyway.) But my oldest is in seventh grade and they are trying to transition the kids into hybrid research outline, what will happen in sexism essays high school, and my daughter has balked at all the hybrid cars homework. But we have never approached our kids’ homework as our responsibility. Essays. We are always available to help and answer questions, but I explain that I passed whatever grade they are in already, and this is hybrid cars outline, their turn to learn and show what they know. It’s been much harder clamping down on my oldest and making sure she knows what the homework is and has it ready. I explained to her recently that I remember those rebellious feelings, but the only person she’s hurting is herself. She’s limiting her choices later by not doing homework. Her teachers care, but in the end it doesn’t impact them, either. It’s all on of the world in 6 her.
I also told her the worst case scenario is paper outline, she ends up at essay, the local high school by default instead of following her friends to cars paper, better places, but that the sexism essays local high school is good too, so it’s not the end of the world. I actually worry when I read about other parents monitoring elements of research, their kids’ lives so much more closely than I do that I’m not doing enough, but my kids are smart and happy and and now by oodgeroo noonuccal essay, kind and hybrid outline, I think they will do fine in the world, so I suppose we will stick with what we are doing. Critical Essays Hemingway. Because all of us are getting some part of it wrong, regardless. Sumitha Bhandarkar says. Thanks so much for research paper outline, sharing that perspective, Korinthia. I love your calm and collected approach to everything parenting, so I’m not entirely surprised with the way you approach home work #128578; That said, in the circles I hang out, very few parents (if any) would be as calm about this as you are! I don’t know if it has anything to do with the fact that most of us are first generation immigrants and research paper, are quite fanatic about paper education… Even among our friends, we are a bit of an extreme case. Our daughter goes to a private school. She’s had to do daily homework on weekdays (Mon – Thu) since Kinder. We did have some initial resistance, but it’s mostly a well-established habit now.
When she comes home, we take a short break, and then she sits down for homework while I get dinner ready. Most of the days, it happens without any issues. Some days, she tries to change the rules by essays on ernest hemingway, wanting to play before homework. Hybrid Cars Research Outline. I understand her want to do that, but having come from a middle class family in a developing country, my perspective on this is very different. We are where we are, quite literally, due to the discipline we had in fortunate essay regards to education. That discipline is a very powerful thing and like many things the earlier you get it instilled the easier it is. Hybrid. I see it as my job to instill that discipline in my daughter. What she wants to do with it when she grows up is up to her. Hate Crimes Research. (In my own case, I’ve shelved a Ph.D to be a stay-at-home mom now and pursue what I really want to hybrid cars paper, do. A History Of The World Glasses Thesis. But that’s been possible only because my degree allowed me to get a high-paying job where I was able to save enough that I don’t have to worry about money for a few years. In those years, if I can find a way to earn a modest income from this site without selling my soul, great.
If not, I’ll go back to my old job and repeat the cycle. Hybrid Cars Paper. It’s an amazing freedom to have!) Anyway, so to me, it boils down to this: this is on ernest hemingway, another case of the intricate balance we parents have to strike — we need to nudge our kids to reach their full potential, but without making it stressful and hopefully in a way that they actually enjoy the process. It’s not easy, and like you I wonder sometimes if I’m making the right choice. And here, I’ll defer to your wise words, because I can’t say it any better — my [daughter is] smart and happy and kind and I think will do fine in the world, so I suppose we will stick with what we are doing. Because all of us are getting some part of it wrong, regardless. #128578; I’m endlessly fascinated with how many ways there are to do things as a family. And it’s always interesting to know what others think of as normal. I guess for us it comes down to the idea that learning is hybrid cars research outline, important, but grades are not. Then And Now By Oodgeroo. I had a horribly unfair incident in college concerning a grade, and hybrid, I remember my grandmother smiling and saying, “No one ever asks me what my GPA was.” And it’s true. Noonuccal Essay. MIT was threatening to withhold my brother’s Master’s Degree over a deadline on cars a signature he had nothing to do with, and he just shrugged it off and said, “They can’t take back what I learned.” (They did finally give him his degree, but he really didn’t care.) Grades don’t really mean much.
A “B” for dongbin, one student may be a mark of a lot of effort, and evidence of slacking off for hybrid cars paper, another. I’m more interested in what my kids actually know. I think that’s why Montessori has been such a good fit for sexism essays, us. They teach to the individual, they don’t give letter grades, and there is no sense of competition, only striving to learn more about the world. We know by comparison to other schools around the city that ours is one of the hybrid research outline highest performing, so we feel confident that they are getting a good education, but it’s their education, not mine. Maybe because I grew up in a family of artists? We were always busy, always making things and learning something new. That’s what I want for my kids.
I like that they are never bored, and that they LOVE school. They love it. They pretend not to be sick when they have a cold just so they can go. I guess in my mind that’s what school should be. Someplace to be excited about. Sumitha Bhandarkar says. It is fascinating, isn’t it? I think the way we grow up, and what we have experienced, colors the lens through which we see the world. I agree with you that at the end of the day, learning, and the love of learning, are more important than everything else. I think differently about grades though. Grades to sexism essays, me, are a reflection of how well you can apply that learning.
Knowledge by itself isn’t enough. You need to be able to apply it in some way – either to cars outline, earn a living, or help make the world a better place, or whatever. For kids, getting good grades are a way to practice applying/expressing their knowledge… it’s a very narrow and imperfect way to sexism essays, do it, but it’s what we have, nevertheless. And, I look at hybrid paper, absolute grades… not relative ones. In other words, I don’t care how many other kids did better or worse than her in any given test… I’m interested mainly in a history of the world in 6 glasses thesis what she did or didn’t do well. Just like us, she will sometimes be successful in applying that knowledge.
Sometimes, not as much. The question then is, what can I do to help her better retain what she has learnt and cars research outline, apply it more effectively? Now, if her grades aren’t good because of something outside her control, she is off the glasses thesis hook. Paper Outline. If not, we hold her accountable, and work on a history of the world thesis it together to try and hybrid cars outline, figure out what she can change/improve to do better next time. So far, this seems to have worked and I haven’t beat the joy of learning out of her, yet #128578; But, we’re still at fortunate essay, the beginning of her learning journey… we’ll have to see what happens as we go along and research outline, things get more demanding and more complex… PS: This is one of the more interesting discussions I’ve had on this blog in sexism essays a while — Thank you! #128578; Thanks for the very considered and calm discussion of research paper outline, this issue that is happening here. This piece is hate crimes paper, not about Lily so much as it is cars research, about how great it can be when we parents discard our baggage and come to our children afresh. My book Taming the Tiger Parent has been called ‘a book to xiu thesis, re-orientate’ parenting – and really it is about one thing: Finding empathy and cars outline, connection with our children without letting the world (which does not always want the best for our kids) to xiu thesis, get in the way. Please share so that we get other parents have the confidence to do the hybrid research paper same – and life essay, enjoy their parenting more..(and that’s just the adults!) Sumitha, I’m probably biased about outline grades because my own history with them has been so unrepresentative, and I think people place too much stock in them.
In my kids’ school they work on preparing a portfolio of hate crimes research, all kinds of work rather than relying on letter grades, and that works better for us. But as far as using grades simply as a barometer of hybrid cars paper, whether a child is taking care of fortunate life, responsibilities that seems completely reasonable. That’s one of the hybrid cars research paper discussions I’m continually having with my daughter at the moment, that she needs to provide evidence for her teachers that she’s done the then and now by oodgeroo noonuccal work. She feels the research magic of a book, for essays, instance, is hybrid cars research outline, marred by her picking it apart for an analysis. Fortunate Essay. She’ll read the research paper book, and she’s a good writer, but she resents the type of work assigned about critical essays hemingway it and sometimes won’t do it. (I used to do the same thing, so I get it.) I tell her she just has to pick her consequence. She can either suck it up and do the work, challenge the research paper work by coming up with a different assignment that maybe meets the same criteria the sexism essays teachers are interested in, or not do it. The first two improve her report card, and the third hurts it. The report card is a means to more choices about her future. (As her mom, I’m actually just happy she read and loved the book.) In the end, I’m not worried.
For her, bad grades at a good school are probably worth more than good grades at a bad school, and she will still have more choices than the average child. Hybrid Research. Wherever she ends up she will make it work, but that’s up to her. I acknowledge we are in a privileged position, because she’s got enough talent and charm and resources and life essay, family that she will not starve, she will not be homeless, regardless of grades. I think the real key to success is figuring out your passion if you can, so you know what you’re working toward. Research. As soon as she figures that out I’m convinced she has the skills and fortunate life essay, discipline to build a good life for outline, herself. Sexism Essays. I did. (And my report cards would have given you a panic attack!) Sumitha Bhandarkar says. I have to agree with you and your daughter about the book reports — we did our first one a few weeks back, and it was decidedly much more unpleasant compared to just reading and enjoying the book! Good luck convincing your daughter to pick one of the first two consequences. But it is clear that even if she picks the third you’ll take it in your stride — which is what I find so admirable about hybrid paper you #128578;
Such an interesting discussion, thank you! One more piece to toss in there if you have time for it: I know it’s an article about practicing music, but it’s the same idea about grades as a reward, and how that backfires. I think for me it’s not that grades are not important, it’s that they should reflect something real. If my kids are learning and working hard, the grades will follow.
But their focus should always be on their education, not their grades. That is particularly true in music where racing from one music grade to the next, as kids do here, can destroy enjoyment of music for its own sake – and that is a very sad. Xiu Thesis. It just becomes about paper outline teaching to the test. In my view children should have music as another language – and another outlet for emotion, not just as a way to build CVs. Well said. Couldn’t agree more. Sumitha Bhandarkar says. @Korinthia, sorry for the late reply — busy with the holidays.
Love that article you pointed to. A History Of The Glasses Thesis. Some time back, I came across several articles by Alfie Kohn and got very confused about this whole rewards thingie. At that point I was just starting to move away from cars research paper outline threats, punishment and screaming, and thought I was doing good by fortunate life, using rewards and positive reinforcement instead, and hybrid cars outline, Kohn’s articles turned that notion on it’s head. Things eventually started to fall in place when I read the “Power of Habits” by Charles Duhigg. My very unsubstantiated, unproven, non-scientific conclusion (which I wrote about here) is based on this observation mentioned in that article — Kohn and his colleagues would admit that rewards, bribes and praise do indeed work in the short term — and Chales Duhigg’s observations that once a habit is formed, you can remove the reward completely from the habit loop and the habit will continue. So in dongbin xiu thesis my opinion, if you use rewards as a way to establish a habit and not as the end result, they still have a place. In the cars paper outline case of grades for instance, grades are a way to get into a consistent study habit which is hate paper, — pay attention in class, learn what the teacher is teaching, review at home if necessary, let’s talk about hybrid cars paper it as much as you want or you can look things up in dongbin books/Net, apply in a test. At 1st grade it’s very hard to make learning *all* subjects fun, but a habit like this will apply to all subjects universally. Grades are a great way to get that habit started initially — they are tangible and there is cars research paper, recognition. As we go on, we focus the message on the learning — for instance, like me, grammar was not my daughters favorite subject.
By looking at the test results and saying “Hey, you did well in your grammar test. Then And Now By Oodgeroo Noonuccal. You’re learning a lot for a first grader! What is this you’ve done here? Diagramming? We never did that in hybrid research India. Will you teach me how to diagram a sentence?” implicitly acknowledges the grade on dongbin xiu thesis that test, but the grade isn’t the paper outline focus. When she draws on her white board and teaches me how to diagram a sentence, there is pride and sexism essays, joy in her and now she is a lot more interested in hybrid research outline grammar. I am not a music person (I know, sorry :)) but I would think that using a reward to get a child to practice until the child’s first performance isn’t a bad idea. Hate Crimes Research. Once the child performs in front of an audience, and enjoys that sense of accomplishment, the practice habit will likely carry through, even if you remove whatever temporary reward you used. If the child has an inclination towards music, they will learn to enjoy the practicing part of it too as they go along — it’s just a matter of getting them to do it for long enough to recognize that.
Sumitha Bhandarkar says. @Korinthia, I’m still thinking about it #128578; The latest discussion reminded me about the marble jar experiment you shared on your blog some time back (here). At first your kids may have done the chores to earn those marbles to get the screen time or other things (rewards). But once the system (habit) was established, the marbles (or the things they could buy) is not necessarily a motivator to do the chores… it is “just how things are done” — a simple habit/system that removes the cars paper outline need for verbal negotiation, arguing, reminders, cajoling, power struggles etc from the picture and hence makes what needs to be done tolerable/fun for sexism essays, everyone involved. To be honest on hybrid cars paper music, I think you also know your child is then and now by oodgeroo noonuccal, playing the right instrument when they do want to hybrid research outline, practice.
I know that sounds idealistic but they will be much drawn towards that instrument if it’s the one that lights their ‘spark.’ Lily and Clio both do play the violin to a very high level – but as I explain in my book, that doesn’t mean I have had been to be an Amy Chau tiger parent to get to them point. Also music has become a way of life in our house, and they play music together, which helps. (Sorry to xiu thesis, keep this discussion dragging on forever, but it’s the kind of thing I really enjoy!) Sumitha, I agree about using some rewards for forming habits. When my kids first started violin we got into a routine of combining practice with dessert. We don’t often have dessert, but to hybrid cars research paper, get them in a habit of practicing after dinner they would get marshmallows for each little thing they played. Then just at the end of the practicing. Then Noonuccal. Then not at cars paper outline, all and dongbin xiu thesis, they didn’t notice. They were four and six at the time and that helped because it was easier to catch their attention with marshmallows than with some abstract sense of hybrid cars paper outline, musical improvement, which on violin is painfully slow.
The hardest part about a history thesis teaching beginning violin is to keep students essentially distracted from the cars research paper outline fact that they don’t sound like anything for a long, long time, while they put in the necessary work that will improve how they sound. A History World Glasses Thesis. I used to cars research paper outline, use small stickers with my students to mark when songs were done, but it wasn’t much of a reward. A History Of The In 6 Glasses. My kids’ violin teacher uses toys and candy as incentives week to week, and I can see how it backfires. It takes the focus off the hybrid cars research paper outline work and onto the treat, and not getting the treat feels like punishment. My son’s piano teacher doesn’t even use stickers–just checks things off so he knows not to keep working on dongbin xiu thesis them, and cars, that’s working much better, but there is a lot more instant gratification to piano than there is to violin. In terms of grades, we just view them differently. They tell such an incomplete story that they don’t interest me much.
You know a little something if a kid gets all good grades vs. all bad grades, but beyond that, nothing useful. When I was in 7th grade I had a notoriously sexist shop teacher who would NOT give a girl an A in mechanical drawing. I know my first drawing in then by oodgeroo noonuccal that class was better than the cars paper boy’s sitting next to me, but he got all A’s. Sexism Essays. I complained to my mom who told me when she was in paper outline college absolutely no woman could get an hate crimes paper, A in research paper outline her advertising class, and hate crimes, she was far and hybrid cars research paper, away the best artist there. (Also, some agencies flat out essay, did not hire women, which still blows my mind.) I got alternating A’s and failing grades in reading in hybrid paper outline 6th grade based purely on whether I handed in the assignments. The quality of the writing didn’t matter to the teacher. Would you rather hire a writer who writes well, or one who writes poorly but always meets deadlines?
Depends on the need. When I think about a history world in 6 glasses grades I always think about the valedictorian from research paper outline my brothers’ high school class. One of my brothers spent his senior year at USC. He was second in his class because he got a B in one of those college courses. Number one? A girl who spent all of her high school experience striving for perfect grades. Her brother was the valedictorian of my class, and she felt she had to match that. It was expected. So she took courses purely based on what she could get an A in.
She did not risk taking physics, or calculus. She avoided English and History classes taught by the more challenging teachers. She wasted her chance at by oodgeroo noonuccal essay, an interesting education so she could say she was valedictorian. For myself as a parent, that would not make me proud at all. If as a family we were disadvantaged and that status would provide important opportunities my child wouldn’t otherwise get, then sure, that would be a worthy (if distorted) goal.
It’s all relative, and hybrid cars outline, again, every family is different. Tanith, I agree that kids have to essays on ernest, play an instrument that speaks to outline, them. I wish more parents knew that. I had a sample lesson once with a really hostile boy who had a ton of talent and ability, and his mom was making him play. I asked him what he would rather do, and he wanted to play guitar. I told his mom I thought he should switch (or even just add it) because violin brought him no joy. At it’s core, music should be about joy. His mom had a sense of “violin is better” and it was a status thing for her.
She was shocked I suggest he be allowed to play guitar and said, “You think guitar is okay?” I told her there was nothing wrong with guitar, and if he liked what he was playing he would do better and enjoy it more. Glad your children like playing violin! One of fortunate essay, my projects for the new year is to start building a full size one for my oldest and have her help. (Not many kids get to play a violin they literally had a hand in making, so that should be fun!) Sumitha Bhandarkar says. I love this discussion, too Korinthia! Thank you so much for cars paper, it. Both writing about it, and reading your’s and Tanith’s points of dongbin, view has been great for me for sorting through what I want/stand for, in terms of grades, homework etc. for my daughter. With our choice to send her to hybrid cars research paper outline, a private school, these are a part of our everyday life and essay, being more clear about it sure helps! Your words “If as a family we were disadvantaged and that status would provide important opportunities my child wouldn’t otherwise get, then sure, that would be a worthy (if distorted) goal.” — this describes my life quite literally. While I can see your perspective on grades and paper outline, it makes a ton of sense, it is a history world in 6 glasses, hard for cars research paper outline, me to actually be that cool about essays on ernest hemingway it, simply because I am where I am because of the grades, degrees etc (I had written a guest post a while ago that may provide some background here – on money and happiness).
Even though grades/degrees haven’t brought anything of cars research paper, real substance to my life, they nevertheless are the tickets that opened a lot of doors for fortunate essay, us and so I simply can’t bring myself to cars research, totally break free from them — but I am happy that through these discussions, I am broadening my perspective a bit and hopefully my daughter will benefit from it! About music, most Asian kids end up in piano classes by default, but my daughter didn’t quite show any interest in sexism essays a play keyboard she had as a kid which I took as an indication that it’s not her “thing”. I’ve talked to her a couple of times about guitar classes — while she shows interest in it for hybrid research outline, the novelty of it, she didn’t pounce on it like when I mentioned art class. Dongbin Xiu Thesis. Turns out they did it by testing scores and not the “mix-up” of kids to juggle things up from year to year as I was originally told years ago. Research Paper. Of course this created a bit of dongbin, hurt pride and friction about the subject with my husband and I towards the hybrid research school as we of course thought our child should be in with the other kids. Then And Now Noonuccal Essay. Even now, with a friend’s child being in the other class, there is a pressure for our own child to do better, push harder, get into that class. Luckily my husband is more level-headed about it than me and this article gave me a good wake-up call. I wonder if that bragging isn’t covering up insecurities or worries. I was worried about her starting to read as a preschooler when I found out one of the teacher’s kids was particularly gifted and rolling along at a very fast rate. I was later told several times that our shared love of reading together helped make her a good reader, one of the better ones of her class. Instead is sets up a template that I believe can ruin sibling relationships into adulthood.
